Caput Mortuum

$20.00

Understory watercolours are crafted in small batches from natural, earth based pigments. Each pan of paint is carefully mulled by hand with a simple formula tailored to each pigment. Our pans are poured and dried in layers to minimize bubbles and cracks and to make sure they’re as full as possible.

Caput Mortuum - This is a violet and red tone hematite with lots of body and texture. Hematites are known for their dramatic granulation and colour seperation on rougher papers. When more water is used the pigment particles can settle out in the grooves to create unique testures and effects.

The name Caput Mortuum originates from this pigment’s similarity to a leftover residue from alchemical processes. It roughly translates to “worthless remains”, although it’s anything but that to a paint maker! It’s now the name for any hematite pigment that’s more purple and brown than red.
