Ceramic Palette - Botanical #1
Understory watercolours are crafted in small batches from natural, earth based pigments. Each pan of paint is carefully mulled by hand with a simple formula tailored to each pigment. Paint pans are poured and dried in layers to minimize bubbles and cracks and to make sure they’re as full as possible.
A simple leaf shaped palette with nine hand-carved wells of varrying sizes. The wells are filled with a nice array of earthy tones, from greens and blues to yellows and orange. I tried to pick out colours that I turn too when painting botanicals or forest scenes. This palette is glazed with a nice, matte white and has a small brush rest on the right side.
The colours in this set, starting from the top and going clockwise are Goldenrod, Arnica, Sundown, Venetian Red, Grizzly, Caput Mortuum, Indigo, Cirque and Larch. Full colour descriptions below…

Goldenrod: A muted gold sienna, rich and textured. A field of late summer blooms, damp in the morning mist.
Arnica: A brilliant golden yellow. Named for the countless hillsides I crossed this summer, glowing bright in full bloom.
Sundown: A brilliant tangerine orange for high alpine sunsets. Hematite and goethite in this soil pigment gives it an incredible tinting strength.
Venetian Red: A bright, warm scarlet red derived from iron oxide tinted clay. This paint has a very clean tone with no separation and minimal granulation.
Grizzly: A warm brown ocher with mild granulation and a strong tinting strength.
Caput Mortuum - This is a violet and red tone hematite with lots of body and texture. Hematites are known for their dramatic granulation and colour seperation on rougher papers. When more water is used the pigment particles can settle out in the grooves to create unique testures and effects.
Indigo: This is a robust and deeply granulating navy blue derived from an extract of Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctorium). This paint has an incredible tinting strength, so a little goes a long way!
Cirque: A soft teal blue for painting those bright glacial waters. Created from a mix of natural indigo and yellow ochre.
Larch: A brighter, more yellow leaning green for layering in morning light or painting lush meadows.
