Understory watercolours are crafted in small batches from natural, earth based pigments. Each pan of paint is carefully mulled by hand with a simple formula tailored to each pigment. Our pans are poured and dried in layers to minimize bubbles and cracks and to make sure they’re as full as possible.

The Hearth Palette - This is a moody set of four colours, full of warm tones, tons of texture and granulation. My idea for this palette was to create something that feels like the comforting glow around a crackling fire, though some of these colours also drew inspiration from active and inactive volcanic landscapes. The hot churning magma under a crust of dark basalt, the haze of smoke and ash hanging over a valley. Either way you interpret these colours, they’ll be perfect for any project where you need a real sense of warmth and texture.

This palette includes halfpans of four watercolours; Burnt Sienna, Cold Hematite, Violet Lalvarite and Gilsonite. Individual colour descriptions are below…

Burnt Sienna - A nice deep brick red with hints of warm brown. The heavier, darker particles will settle into the grooves of your paper giving this colour some beautiful granulation and texture.

Cold Hematite - A smooth, silky red with bluish undertones. Hematite is an iron oxide rich mineral known for its incredible tinting strength, opacity and lightfastness. A little goes a long way with this colour.

Violet Lalvarite - A soft lavender grey with tons of granulation and texture. Lalvarite is a  type of igneous rock created by certain lava flows. It’s not commonly used as a pigment, but I love it’s subtle, hazy purple hue.

Gilsonite - A very dark brown, heavily textured paint with a little bit of satin shimmer in the right light. This colour is made of from gilsonite, a mineral used to create asphalt.
